Alabama A&M has officially named Rufus Green as the next head coach of its softball program, the university announced Tuesday. Green arrives on The Hill after serving as the head coach at Fort Valley State, bringing more than two decades of coaching experience at both the high school and collegiate levels.
Green built a strong résumé with the Wildcats, leading the program to the 2024 SIAC East Division championship while earning SIAC Coach of the Year honors. Under his leadership, Fort Valley State also finished as the SIAC runner-up in both 2025 and 2026, continuing the program’s rise as a conference contender.
A graduate of Columbus State University and a U.S. Army Airborne veteran, Green is known for emphasizing discipline, player development, accountability and academic success. His coaching background also includes stops at Macon County High School and Taylor County High School, along with serving as an assistant with Fort Valley State football and as an adjunct instructor before taking over the Wildcats’ softball program.
“We are very excited to welcome Coach Green to the Hill,” Alabama A&M Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Paul A. Bryant said. “I’m ready to see the growth and development of our student-athletes under his leadership as well as the success of the Alabama A&M softball program.”
Green summarized his coaching philosophy simply:
“Dominate the areas you control: Your energy, effort and attitude.”
He takes over an Alabama A&M program looking to build momentum in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, with expectations that his championship experience and leadership will help elevate the Bulldogs in the seasons ahead.
